Be an Advocate for the Homeless in Massachusetts
Each year, the Mass. Coalition for the Homeless asks its members to come to the State House to call for more resources to prevent and end homelessness. This year the Coalition will be hosting Legislative Action Day on Wednesday, February 29th (Leap Day!) in the Great Hall of the State House. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a morning session at 9:30 a.m., and appointments with State Representatives and State Senators from noon to 3 p.m.
There will be an exciting and engaging series of speakers including legislators, religious leaders, providers, and youth who have experienced homelessness. Then in the afternoon session, everyone can have an opportunity to meet with the legislators and aides to talk about homelessness and the various campaigns that the Coalition is working on. Click here to see the Coalition's FY'13 budget priorities related to housing, homelessness prevention, emergency services, cash assistance programs, and educational resources.

Hometown Bank has concluded its eighth annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors campaign with the presentation of checks totaling $10,000 to five local food pantries. Hometown Bank personal and business customers contributed $5,000 throughout the month of November, and those donations were matched by the bank at the end of the campaign.
At a December breakfast gathering, Hometown Bank President and CEO Matthew S. Sosik praised representatives from the participating food pantries for their commitment and hard work.
“As a committed local bank, we are in a position to help raise funds,” he said, “but all of you are on the front lines doing the really hard work. We are honored to play a role in helping you.”
With Hometown Bank’s addition of new branches in Athol and South Lancaster earlier this year, two food pantries that serve residents around those branches were added to the list of agencies that benefited from the 2011 campaign.
Executive Director Jim Sheehan and Donna Jarvis accepted the check for WHEAT Community Services Food Pantry at 500 Main St., Suite 203 in Clinton. WHEAT helps to serve the needs of our neighbors in the communities of Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Lancaster, South Lancaster and Sterling.
The combined donations of Hometown Bank and its customers in the 2011 Neighbors Helping Neighbors campaign resulted in an increase of more than $3,000 to area food pantries over last year’s campaign. A complete list of donors may be found at www.hometowncoop.com/neighbors.htm.

MA Veterans Homelessness Drops 21% vs Last Year
Finally some good news! The Associated Press reported today that the rate of homelessness among veterans in Massachusetts has dropped 21 percent over the past year. The decline in Massachusetts was nearly double the 12% drop nationwide. The 2011 supplement of the Annual Homeless Assessment Report prepared by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development showed that 67,495 Veterans were homeless in the United States on a single night in January 2011 -- a significant reduction from last year’s single night count of 76,329.
Department of Veterans Services Secretary Coleman Nee and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officials say the success stems in part from innovating programs, a committed network of service providers and Massachusetts's strong benefits system for veterans.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray leads the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans' Services and the Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness. He says the administration will continue to work with local, state and federal agencies to help people move to affordable and stable housing.
